Rites of
Hajj
STEP 1:
á
Pilgrims start at one of the five miqats locations, the most popular & nearest to Medinah is called Masjid Al-Shajarah.
STEP 2:
á
It is highly recommended that one perform ghusl al-ihram (ritual bath) before leaving to miqat.
á
Wearing ihram, and observing its 25
restrictions.
STEP 3:
á
Reciting the niyah
(intention) for Umrah ut-Tamattu
of Hajjul Islam
STEP 4:
á
Talbiyah is
immediately followed by niyah at the miqat.
Umrah ut-Tamattu has the following 5 rites
(NIYAH MUST BE MADE FOR
EACH OF THE 5 RITES)
1. Ihram.
2. Tawaf (7 circulation around the Ka`bah).
3. Tawaf prayer (behind Maqam Ibrahim (as)).
4. &n
bsp; Sa`yi (walk between Safa & Marwa).
5. Taqseer (clipping of the hair and nails).
1st Rite
of Umrah ut-Tamattu
Ihram
ÊÊ For men it is a
special two piece, plain & seamless attire; one of which is wrapped around
the waist & held up by a belt, & the other piece is wrapped around the
shoulders.
ÊÊ Men are not allowed
to cover their head from the sun or rain, & no wearing of closed shoe.
ÊÊ Although, women are
not obligated to the rule, it is recommended &
amp; many choose to wear a
two-piece white garment.

Some
Forbidden Acts In Ihram
á
Looking into the mirror.
á
Men: Wearing sewn clothes, socks, & closed
shoes (slippers permitted).ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊ
á
Men: Seeking shelter from the sun or rain.
á
Women: Wearing gloves & covering face.
á
Women: Menstruating women cannot be in the
vicinity of the Ka`bah but are permitted in the sa`yi area.
á
Use of scent/perfume & applying oil (even if
unscented).
á
Lying, quarrelling, killing of insect (unless to
protect oneself).
á
Pluck or shave body hair, and cutting nails.
á
Pulling/cutting leaves off tree, grass, of the Haram.
á
Wearing of arms or weapons.
á
Conducting marriage ceromony,
sexual intercourse, masturbation, looking with desire,
kissing or touching.
á
Beautifying oneself
& applying eyeliner (khhol).
á
Extracting tooth or taking blood out of body.
á
Hunting (except fishing).
á

2nd Rite of Umrah
ut-Tamattu
Tawaf
á
Recall tawaf niyah (intention).
á
Pilgrims perform 7 tawafs
around the Ka`bah counterclockwise.
á
Start & end at Hajar
al-Aswad (Black Stone).
á
Keep Ka`bah on left
side.
á
Stay between Maqam Ibrahim & Hijr Ismael, if possible.
á
Recommended to recite Quran
or du?a (supplication).
3rd Rite
of Um
rah ut-Tamattu
Tawaf Prayer
á
Pilgrims recall niyah
& perform tawaf prayer at Maqam
Ibrahim (Station of Ibrahim
(as)).
á
Depending on the crowd, tawaf
prayer can be done behind Maqam Ibrahim
(as) or as close as possible.
4th Rite
of Umrah ut-Tamattu
Sa`yi
Recommended to recite Quran or du`a in the Sa`yi.
á
Pilgrims recall niyah
for sa`yi.
á
7 walk between the two mounts of Safa & Marwa starting at Safa & ending at Marwa.
á
Men: recommended to briskly pace themselves
between the two marked lines at the middle of the sa`yi.
á
It is not necessary for pilgrims to be in a state
of taharah in the area of the sa`yi (ritual purity).
5th Rite
of Umrah ut-Tamattu
Taqseer
á
Recalling niyah for taqseer (clipping of the hair).
á
Pilgrims clip hair & nails.
á
Pilgrims must clip hair before clipping the hair
of another pilgrim.
á
Pilgrims can now remove ihram & resume some
activities which were denied during the state of ihram.
In Mekkah pilgrims
prepare for ihram of hajj on the 8th day of Thil Hijjah.
Hajj ut-Tamattu Rituals
Has the following13 rites:
1. Ihram
from Mekkah.
2. Wuquf at Arafat on 9th of Thil Hijjah from

the night &wuqufÊ at Muzdalifah on the eve of 10th Thil
Hijjah & collecting 70 pebbles.
4.
Grand
Jamarah Rami (grand Satan
pillar) on 10th of Thil Hijjah
with 7 pebbles.
5. Animal
Sacrifice on 10th Thil Hijjah
(Eid al-Adha).
6. Shaving/cutting
of Hair on the 10th of Thil Hijjah.
7. Tawaf of Hajj.
8. Tawaf Prayer.
9. Sa`yi.
10. Tawaf Nisa.
11. Tawaf of Nisa Prayer.
12. Staying
over night in Mina on the eve of the 11th & 12th.
13. Jamarat Rami on the day of the
11th & 12th of Thil HijjahÊÊÊÊÊÊ ÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊÊ(all 3 Satan pillars).

Recall niyah.

Collect pebbles (approx. 70).
á Stay part of the night on eve of 10th Thil Hijjah until sunrise.

4th,
5th, & 6th Rites of Hajj ut-Tamattu
In Mina

Recall niyah for stay
in Mina.

On 10th of Thil Hijjah (Eid al-Adha) pilgrims stone the grand jamarah
pillar (Satan pillar)7 times, making sure that 7
stones hit the pillar.

Sacrifice animal.
á
First-time male pilgrims must shave head,
recalling niyah; otherwise, taqseer
is required for returning pilgrims & women.
á
Pilgrims are now free from some of the
restrictions of ihram, except adhering to the use of perfume, hunting, &
marital relation.
7th,
8th, & 9thÊ Rites
of Hajj ut-Tamattu
Returning to Mekkah

Recall niyah.
á
Pilgrims perform tawaf
of Hajj ut-Tamattu.

Tawaf prayer at Maqam Ibrahim, with niyah.

Sa`yi,
7 times walk between Safa & Marwa,
with niyah.
*By doing this, the restriction of perfume is lifted, except marital
relation.
10th,
11th, 12th, & 13thÊ
Rites of Hajj ut-Tamattu
Returning to Mina

On the 11th & 12th of Thil
Hijjah: stay overnight in Mina, with niyah.
á On the 11th & 12th of Thil Hijjah: stoning the 3 jamarah (Satan) pillars in consecutive order (small, medium, & large).

Pebbles must hit pillars.
á
Pilgrims must use their own pebbles; cannot
throw used or fallen pebbles.
á
Maintain cautiousness from flying pebbles that
migh
t cause injury.
á
Return to Mekkah, thus
completing the performance of hajj.
